Thanks for the tips! It’s great to have this resource for a 32 year old boat. I’ll have to check on where to fill the water heater.

Based upon the comments here, it would seem to make sense to have a bleed valve installed on the top of the thermostat housing. I’m thinking of one shaped like a wing nut that can be hand tightened. Would the engine block coolant drain plug be part #11 on page 200 of the W 58 parts manual?

Bob: thanks for the tip. By the way, how do you get the air bubble out of the thermostat housing?

Aloha Tor: Thanks for the details. Our canvas lady is amazing. The best on the island! She’ll make short work of this. No more “Chinaman’s Hat” under way.

Sailing on the west end of O’ahu is always challenging, unless you sail far off shore. The mountains and valleys can funnel the 15-20 trades to 30+ and keeps you on your toes. Our approach is to sail with jib and jigger, which eliminates hassling with reefing and constantly trimming a main. Of course, we’re never in a hurry.

Tor: I might add to your wireless unit comments the fact that, if selected, you experience none of the hassle of running cables on an old boat. Big plus when you have to face pulling things apart that have been fastened for 30 years. That fact confirmed my decision.

I bought a TackTick wireless unit and have the readouts on a velcro strap which I located on the mizzen, in front to the wheel. When I’m finished using it, I take it off and stash it down below. No muss, no fuss.

Aloha Lee: have your guy “friend” Dennis Morrison on Facebook. He’s a dock bud of mine at Ko Olina marina and sailed here from Tahiti last Fall. He’d be happy to help. Make sure he mentions my name in his initial post.

I thought you were going to recommend cuddling up to a wet pig Tor. Great article in this month’s SAIL!

No need for A/C here in Hawai’i. Highs always in the low 80’s, lows in the low 70’s. Trades or Kona winds always blowing. Gee, I love it here!

For the aft bunk, we bought those interlocking plastic springs. I can’t remember the brand, but I believe it was a a 4 letter Swedish name. They are in the small space ads in the sailing mags. They really work and can be form fitted to the weird size of that bunk. BIG difference!

Thanks all. I guess we’re talking about 5/8″ between the fiberglass and the plywood core.

All of that wasted vertical space in the u-shaped galley fridge. I’ve considered fabricating 2 rolling plexiglass shelves to take the place of the original single fiberglass shelf in there. They would roll to starboard for access from above.

I usually store beer on the port side of the floor dam as it is probably the coldest place in the box. Stacked horizontally, you can put in at least a 12 pack of longnecks with no fear of rolling about. However, you have to have Cheeta’s arms to get them out.

We store soft drinks in the cubby under the stove. Leaving them in their 12 pack boxes allows several flavors to fit in there. The angle of the hull makes them self feed to the door opening for easy access.

I also installed an access door on the outside starboard face of the ice box cabinet, to take advantage of all the space under the drawers. This is a great place for a beer locker.
