    Hey, John,

Where are they? And you? I’m currently in Miami anchored off the Miami
    Yacht Club!

I would be nice to see you all!

Tor, I have a tiller pilot that will connect to my windvane but never set it
up. I know how it works in theory, though, from the previous owner.

Having seen this on Tor’s boat, I have to agree 100% – I’ve never thought of
this after horror stories I’ve heard about wire halyards, but it has another
advantage over rope – the wire halyard doesn’t bang the mast – at least in
winds less than hurricane strength and I HATE that banging!

Typically, you’d treat the prop shaft on a v-drive exactly as you would on
any shaft – it should be in-line with the output shaft and not cocked. So,
    yes, you should gap it.

    Hi Rich,

The windward side doesn't drain well now, so no loss.  The advantage of scuppers is that four holes in the deck are removed and that four large and difficult to get to through hulls are removed.  I'd rather have black stripes than sunken boat.  Moreover, the deck drains are placed particularly to not drain all the water (not in the low part of the deck), so there's that.

I was going to take the current deck drains and elbow them directly out to the hull.  I'll wash the black marks if I have to.

As far as the sugar scoop stern goes, if it was done right it's a capital idea!  I like it a lot!  Will I do it? probably not.

I would happily remove the caprails and fiberglass the hull-deck seam and call the whole thing good.  Especially if I removed the eyebrow like Lee did.  It makes the boat look more modern and when the entire deck is painted it looks really good.

On the other hand, I saw Whoosh the other day and it looks like a new boat.  Apparently they take care of it better than I do mine…

I would advise against scuppers that go through the rail.  My previous boat had that setup.  There was always a dark stain down the topsides where water drained.  The windward side didn't drain well when under sail either.

    Hi Linus,

I think you should use real sanitation hose. It's designed for what you're trying to do and lasts for years and years.

That said, I'd sure like to find out how your installation goes.  I mean, I hope 10 years down the road you can give a report…

Dr. LED makes a tricolor bulb for a masthead light, too, if yours is tricolor.

    Rich,

If you have the Aqua Signal 41s – the size required for our boats, Dr. LED has the lights for them – remember the LED color has to match the lens – you can't put a white LED in a multicolored lens, it will only show through the white part.  Dr. LED has the three color bulbs for the typical tricolor and the dual color bulbs for the two color (and indeed the single color for the single color lenses).

It should be well less than $500.

    Hi Rodd,

Pete Dubler of SCADtech is involved with that – I was hoping to use his lights but they weren't available before I left.  I can offer this, though.  If you have a standard anchor light fitting, Dr. LED has a bulb for it – that's what I used and they seem to work just fine in the fitting you have (especially if it's Aqua Signal).

It's visible for the required three miles for a vessel our size.

I still hope Pete gets his new lights out because I want to replace my spreader lights with LEDs and his promise to be quite reasonable and bright.

I wasn't mentioning the dot as a (r) for legal purposes – I couldn't care less.  Just so that the dot either isn't there or it is an (r).  That's all.  There's no purpose for just a dot, if you follow me.
