Can’t wait for the install. It looks like a great system.

That’s good to hear I was worried that the new engine had some problems. It’s always the accessories that cause the stress, the boat almost always works.

As usual you make me feel a little stupid when it come to some of the decissions that I have made. I did most of the labor and still spent close to 20k. That included a new inverter, honda generator, new fuel tank, four new batteries, rebuilding bilge pumps and of course some new tools to play with.

Why are you pulling the mounts? I thought that it had only been a few years since you installed the engine.

While we’re in the anchor mode. Did you post any photos of the finished product in your anchor well rebuild? I am getting ready to install the windlass and the chain locker below looks small. I like the idea of putting a floor in the bottom and installing drains to the exterior. But with the bow down I worry about getting water coming in when heeled over.

Most of the platforms that I have seen on 424s have no support. I have seen a few that have been bent down. I added a platform last year with a strut the only problem is that it is too heavy. I used stainless pipe that was scrap from a friend’s welding shop. I spent hours polishing a schedule 80 pipe that weighs almost as much as the anchor but if I bump into anything the pipe won’t bend.

Maybe it’s just proper sail management!

ParticipantIf you haven’t got the caprails under water either the genoa is too small or the wind wasn’t big enough.

ParticipantWhile we’re talking about access to through hulls, the one that scares me to death is the one just aft of the captain’s berth. It is for the cockpit drain on the port side. I am going to install a hatch at the foot of the bed. I plan to eventually lengthen the berth but the compressor for my refrigeration is mounted just aft of the bulkhead. The compressor is 30 years old I’m sure it will need to be serviced and I can move it a little further aft. When I do this I can make the bottom of the extension lift out for access to the valve.
My paranoia and long legs just seem to work together

Have the decks been painted in the pictures of your dodger?
Completely off the subject. What is the bird house looking thing on the port side of your main mast?Linus

ParticipantGreat! I’ve found some blocks for 7/16 max that are in my price range if the bidding doesn’t go crazy.

ParticipantAlways trying to get out cheap sometimes I wind up making a mess but the idea of using a tiller pilot as a backup auto pilot seems like a great idea. ($350.00 not $3500.00) Only thing is I don’t have windvane steering or a main autopilot yet but I do have stainless pipe and can find or make a rudder and collect some bearings. How trailer park would it look to put a small rudder on the stern just for the tillerpilot. It would take up very little room and should be easy and inexpensive to fabricate and I do soooo! want an auto pilot. I have a swim platform it could go right through and be out of the way. I will have to come up with a way to store it. Either simply disconnnect and lift up the entire shaft or pull a pin and have just the rudder kick up or come off the shaft. If it were just disconnected from the tillerpilot and allowed to stay in the water it shouldn’t create much drag. Just rambling now so let me know just how stupid this sounds. I do need another project to dream about.

The best addition I’ve made to the boat is not in the interior. The swim platform is the kids favorite place to sit while sailing or at anchor. It also makes it much easier to board and unload the dinghy especially in a rough anchorage. It also makes a great place to shower the sand off before climbing into the cockpit.

I haven’t looked too hard at this one yet. In the vberth on the starboard side I grabbed the trim on the base of the teak plywood forward of the portlight too turn around in the berth and the whole panel on that side has dropped about half an inch out of place. When you take out the wood would you let me know how it is secured. I have been busy with other boat projects and with a quick look I didn’t see any obvious fasteners. The aft end has the port light and forward there seems to be nothing holding the panel in place. As we say down south I’m fixin’ to install the windlass so I will be spending a little more time up there while waiting for the epoxy to kick maybe I’ll have a chance too investigate the support. I could become the dreaded PO and just through bolt it.
