My Lewmar 1000 windlass is mounted on the bow over where the old Ideal windlass was installed. I had to glass in the old windlass hole and raise the height of the new windlass as shown in the photo of Syringa on your blog. I glassed in a 2″ PVC pipe so I could move the chain to the center of the new chain locker below. I glassed in a 1/2 plywood plate at the bottom of the locker so it would not drain into the bilge and drilled a drain hole on the port side just above the plate. I carry 350′ of 5/16 HT chain (in one piece) on Syringa, about 250′ is in the locker and 100′ on top of the water tank. I also cut a 2″ hole into the chain locker/vee berth bulkhead about 2″ above the bottom of the locker so I can move the chain from one area to the other. The chain on top of the water tank is self feeding when dropped but I have to hand pull it back into that compartment.

When at anchor I run a 5/8″ chain snubber over the port anchor roller and tie it off to the port cleat. This system has held Syringa fast in the mud in over 50 knot winds. I’m using a 48# CQR anchor and have a 35# backup in the aft cockpit locker. I also installed a washdown system as the mud is very sticky up here.

e-mail me at lighthms@comcast.net about Syringa (right now I’m having seller’s remorse). I love working on her and had a great sail to day ago. I’m going down to the boat to adjust rudder packing and clean a small bilge pocket.

I removed the old vinyl wall paper from the fwd bulkhead and around the door and left the area around the shower untouched. Removing the vinyl is EZ /its the glue that’s the killer. I did this because the vinyl wall covering seams were starting to open and the old vinyl looked like hell (or the 70’s which is about the same thing). Anyway I filled any rough areas of the wood paneling with a marine filler (body putty) and sanded it smooth with about 220 grit. My wife got the job of painting both the wood paneling and the area I did not remove of vinyl. The Kilz is a killer in a small area but it let us use the Bahr over both the vinyl and wood. The vinyl she painted over does look the best to me as it has some texture to it. We also updated all the hardware in the head with new (The boat now has better towel holders than the house)

I used an old Ordnance Parachute I found at a Army Navy store in Lewiston Idaho for a sea anchor on my last boat. It was made to slow the drop torpedo from a bomer. It was made very very heavy mesh about the right size 9′ and best of all it only cost $50. I let it go when I sold the boat. So it you find one let me know.

Two years ago we using Pettit Dura White to re-due are lockers. Its waterdase and mildew proof. We also used Kilz white pigment primer, sealer in our head to coverup the oil (Yellow/Green/Silver) vinyl wall covering, we then painted it with (soft blue) Bear Satin Interion paint that was also mildew proof. It still looks good.

Patti & I don’t know where we’re going (how far north) or how long we’ll be gone, we’re just going cruising. We are looking for some better weather right now, it’s no fun sailing in the rain and cold for week’s on end. We did the Alaska trip in are last boat a few years back so we are going to look at some new areas this time out. If the weather is good and we are having fun we should be out about four or five months.

Very nice photo of you & Dawn on your blog (lucky man).

The last posting did not go throw.

I just installed a AIS on Syringa I can pick up ships in Bellingham 18 miles away. Very Cool) It gives me the name, speed and bearing and much more. I payed $450 after a $50 sale. I is a snap to install and I run it on a Garmin 440S in the cockpit and my laptop (Maptech Chart navigator pro in the nav station. Here is a link:

None of my bulds have screw bases. I got the bulbs that fit the sockets on each light.

I got my lights ion today. I did a test with the old lights and the amp draw was 2 3/4 amp for 6 lights. I got about the same light and it’s draw is now about 3/4 amp. To say the least I am Happy.
