ParticipantThanks, Ken. That sounds like something I might find at Ace Hardware.
I’m giving this old gal a general sprucing up this summer and would love to lighten the very dark teak with which I’ve been living since day one.

ParticipantBob,
You wrote, “use a loop of amsteel to link all three blocks together…” What are you describing here? Is this a way to tension split or double backstays? Can you sketch the general idea of how it assembles? If there’s a way to get Silverheels to point 10° higher I’d like to employ it.
Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantI don’t suppose you (or anyone here) has a sketch of that configuration…

ParticipantI’ve seen that rig, Bob, and certainly it must help, perhaps a lot. Not sure if I could manage it on my double backstays, as wide apart as they are. It’s something to look into, however.

ParticipantI’d rather Silverheels could point like your sloop, Rich, but there are other compensations to having a mizzen sail. In the end it seems everything about boats – and maybe about life, for that matter – is a compromise.

ParticipantExcellent info, Rich. Thanks.
I changed the original split main backstay to a double backstay when I re-rigged the boat, but still don’t see a way to tension it to the extent you suggest. Sounds like I’ll just have to accept tacking in 100° with my ketch rig.

ParticipantSilverheels’ Certificate of Documentation says 18 GRT
and 16 NRT. I’ve cleared into a score of countries in
the Caribbean and the Med, and while some forms ask for
one or both tonnages, none have ever charged a
tonnage-related fee. Occasionally there is a big price
jump for length, such as in the Bahamas over 35′ and in
Grenada over 40′.Tonnage fees might well apply to commercial shipping,
but not to yachts that I’ve ever seen.Tor

ParticipantI know less about racing than the proverbial tortoise,
Charlie, but I believe the magic balance you’re looking
for is (or used to be) called VMG, velocity made good.
I saw it once on an instrument gauge on a boat I
delivered a million years ago.I’ve always considered pointing 45° to the true wind,
i.e., tacking in 90°, to be about average for a
cruising-type sailboat in moderate conditions. Ditto
for making an additional 5° leeway, so that the TMG
(Tack Made Good – I just made that up) is 100°. That’s
a bit better than Silverheels manages if I want to keep
her speed up, and I feel like she should be pointing
better – higher – than she does. I’d be interested to
know how others fare in that regard.Tor

ParticipantI’m delighted to hear the 424’s are performing so well
against other designs. I like Silverheels’ overall
characteristics. She’s a comfortable Caribbean cruiser,
but an indifferent sailor to windward. This in spite of
1-year-old sails, including fully battened main &
mizzen, which I believe I do know how to trim properly.
It’s all she can do to tack in 110° plus 5° leeway for
120° made good (i.e., 60° COG either side of the wind).
Pinching higher slows her down too much. I’m having the
genoa re-cut now – the loft screwed up the leech shape.
Perhaps that will improve things. How do these angles compare to your 424’s performance?

ParticipantSo you don’t think incense and incantations will help? Bummer.
As for expensive, try pricing these things down-islands. Most Americans don’t realize how cheap things are here. This is why I came back at all this year, because the boat needs a longish list of relatively big-ticket items and it’s so much easier and cheaper here than anywhere else in this hemisphere. Hopefully this season’s spree will set me up for some years to come.

ParticipantJoe, you’d be amazed at how much I don’t know. I
constantly am. What you say makes perfect sense, but in
any case as soon as any charge is removed from my
current battery bank – charger, solar and/or wind –
they immediately drop to 12.5V and then down to 12.4V
within a minute or so, with or without a draw. Five
minutes later they’re 12.2V and it only gets more
dismal from there. They are shot, plain and simple. Thanks,
Tor

ParticipantGood info, Quent. Thanks.
Alas, no camping for me this summer. It’s once again
time for the other side of cruising, some months of
refreshing, renewing, refitting and re-provisioning
Silverheels so we can get back down to the Caribbean
right after hurricane season, maybe this time to the
western side. So I’ll remain aboard at my home port
boat yard on the St. Johns River in northeast Florida,
with a Home Depot air conditioning unit on the hatch
abaft the mainmast. I’m actually kind of looking
forward to it, tweaking things and generally messing
around with this good old boat some more. How about you? Montana-bound?
