My only comment is we used Interdeck by Interlux.  Love it.  Goes on very easily and looks very attractive. And it is functional without being rough on bare feet. Touch ups are easy and thus far match color wise very well, though the sheen is somewhat different on recently applied material. I expect it will weather in over time.  Anyway, ours has been on for about six months.  Only reason I had to touch up was for a minor screw up on my part.  Application is by roller and I used a foam cabinet roller with rounded edges.  No roll marks.  I consistently get unsolicited positive comments on its appearance.  I did fill my non-skid pattern with thickened epoxy and a bondo applicator, then sanded.  Not that big a deal, though the non-skid pattern still does show. But it looks nice.  I expect you could roll it on without filling first and it  would look very good.  I had some repairs to the deck and wanted consistency, which is why I filled first. Two cautions: Apply the material when the surface temp  is  cool.  If too hot, you get lines  and the material does  not flow as well.  And if you pick grey for your color, be advised it is very dark.  We experimented and settled on eight parts white to one part grey.  Wound up a very attractive light grey that does not absorb too much heat.

I think it unlikely that the engine is running at 200 degrees plus if you are measuring 180 at the thermostat housing with the infrared heat gun. I am assuming your overheat sensor is at the thermostat housing? You may want to read the thread ‘Hot W58’, which contains some data concerning engine temps that were recorded at the cockpit gauge and simultaneously with an infrared heat gun. Towards the bottom of the thread you can find actual recorded temps from Blue Moon and Discoverie.

I suspect you may have another bad sensor or the installation location may not be optimal? Maybe need to go to a different brand OH detector? Or perhaps the electrical connections may not be correct?

I installed an aftermarket high temp sensor at the thermostat housing after the one the PO installed became disbonded from the extruded exhaust manifold. I failed to write down the brand, etc, but could find it if you want. I’m happy with the sensor except that it is set to go off at 200 degrees F, if memory serves. I still have engine overheat issues, and when I occasionally push power up to 2200 or over to make a bridge, or whatever, the temp will get to 200 and the alarm goes off. Not so bad if it would turn off once I’m back at 180. But the reset is around 160 degrees. So I have a SPDT switch in series so I can turn the alarm off. Of course then I have to watch the temp gauge like a hawk. Not ideal.

Does anyone have a sense of how much the unit affects sailing performance? I know that’s pretty subjective thing but I am interested in general impressions.

    Hello Roger,

Sorry I did not read your response till just now. Must have come in during one of those periods when I was having some difficulty getting messages. My bad for not following up. Thank you very much for your data. Very interesting, and despite the differences in OAT and raw water temp, I think your motor runs substantially cooler. I plan to pull my engine this Summer and repair oil leaks, replace some components, etc.. This might be a good time to replace the heat exchanger. I also plan to pull the recirculating pump and inspect. I know these are not supposed to be a cause of overheating, but know at least one case in an automotive gas engine that the metal impeller was so abraded through long use that it was not doing the job. I will report my findings.

Again, apologies for not responding sooner…

Same problem as Revery, I think. I have been posting, but not making it through. It appears things are working for me now.

To be honest, I was intrigued by Kiwi Grip and was going that direction. The wife wanted Interdeck for reasons I wont go into, but I am glad we went that way. Takes a while to harden, but then it is very durable. I don’t think it will ever lift at the edges as someone described Kiwi Grip as doing.

I talked to a salesman at a boat show a few years back about the external units. They look to be of pretty good quality and I haven’t heard anything bad about them. Of course you can expect a reduction in sailing performance on the order of half a knot I am told, but I don’t think it should be that much based on what I saw. I believe the fellow told me that one had been installed on a 424 and the owner disagreed with the maker of the unit regarding it’s installation. Specifically the angle at which the unit was mounted. He reportedly felt a more ‘streamlined’ arrangement would work better and had an angled shim of some sort installed. The company disagreed but did it anyway. That’s all I know. Perhaps the individual who had this unit installed will read this and enlighten us further. I too am intrigued by the idea but that will have to wait, probably indefinitely.

Don’t know if you saw my previous reply, it appears my mail may not be making it out.

We have the Harken MKIV 2. Came with the boat. Works fine in all kinds of weather we have encountered.

    Hello Ewan,

I apologize if this is repetitive but I am still interested in the mast pulpits, two each. Last name is Tye.

For some reason, most of my replies to threads aren’t making it to the website. I’ve responded to several, and the responses do not show. Hopefully this one makes it.

I have been traveling on Blue Moon in the Bahamas so that might have some bearing on the problem. Back in the States now, but still on the boat for another month or so.

Thanks so much Ewan for leading this charge!

I am interested!  Currently cruising in Eleuthra, so responses from me may be slow.  But the standard pulpit with the bells and whistles that Tor installed looks mighty fine.

    Ewan,

You dawg.  I guess this explains that new Cadillac.  My donation is forthcoming…

No  cheap insurance offers here. Thank you for all your efforts. You are most appreciated by myself and I’m sure most others on this site.

Well, a little disheartening to read the SSCA Forum on Bluewater. Yes, I believe it is the same company that we went with.  But so far, the customer service has been very good.  We did not deal directly with Mr Spink, who seems to be at the center of the controversy.  The comments I read regarding difficulty with an actual claim appeared to be with an underwriter called Commandeur.  Ours is underwritten by Lloyds of London.  Hopefully makes a difference.  A friend of ours who has Lloyds reported a good relationship with them. I don’t know who their broker is.

Appreciate the heads up, John.  Could be we do a fresh survey when we pull the boat in a couple of years and re-look the situation….depending on our experience with Bluewater.

    Hello all,

We have insurance now through Lloyds of London, obtained through Bluewater Insurance. It is Agreed Value for $85K, without having to do a new survey. They had the most extensive application process, but they made it easy for us. We can get a new survey later to possibly increase our hull insurance. The premium is $1881/yr, extremely competitive with all of the agreed value policies we looked at, and lower than most of the “Market Value” quotes. Pretty satisfied so far.

Checked with Jackline and Atlass. Atlass quoted Foremost. Foremost offered Agreed Value and might have been our second choice except for some odd provisos with named storms. Jackline was only Actual Cash Value, but would reconsider with a new survey. A friend on a very nice Tayana 37 has a great rate with Novamar, but Bluewater came through for us first.

We looked at around eight or ten options, and are pretty confident we are getting a fair shake with Bluewater/Lloyds. Now if we can only get a break on the weather we will get out of Boot Key and depart for the Bahamas!

    David
