RichCarterParticipantGee, if you have a self-tailer, why the jam-cleat?

RichCarterParticipantMine drains. Not all 424’s are the same however so if yours is holding water you might look at building up the bottom a little to pitch it so that it drains. At that, water will still get in there when you shower so cleaning would be needed. We use X14, a mildew cleaner that works very well.
Hardware stores sell a type of rubber gasket material that is used on home windows as a weather sealant. The stuff comes in a small roll and has two beads of self-sticking gasket. The rubber is soft and makes a good seal. I used this stuff on my ice-box lid to seal it tight. While my lid has been replaced to remove the hinge, the same gasket would work on the hinged top and would probably work on the shower seat. You might keep the water out of the seat-tub, but now you’ll have a gasket to clean 🙁

Thanks for the attachment. The information will be very useful. At this point, it will be just my wife Linda and I. I’ll be coming down alone but Linda will drive down and meet me for the weekend. Would it be possible for her to park at your yacht club? We’re members of Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly, Mass if reciprocal privileges are offered. We might have another couple visit with us as well, but it would be only one car. If parking at the club doesn’t work, is there another convenient place to park? Also, can I bring the dinghy in somewhere to pick her up?I’d be most comfortable heading straight for the anchorage, but I’d enjoy a beverage with you on Thurs assuming I get down there early. I hate to cruise to a schedule so my arrival date is uncertain. I’ll give you a call on your cellphone the day before and when I arrive. I’ll probably need a bag of ice, but I should be all set for supplies.
Regards
Rich

RichCarterParticipantOK, that looks straight-forward. How’s the boat-wake situation there? Will we be safe rafting?

That puts us between Ram Island and Horseshoe Pt if I read the online charts right, and this agrees with Thatcher’s description. Is this the agreed spot?
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/13219.shtmlI think we had about 6 boats confirm, but I wasn’t keeping track. Did anyone save the replies?
It looks thin getting in there. It looks like you’d have to go around Gardener’s Island and then wait for some tide before venturing to the anchorage.
Any advice from someone who’s been there before?I’d rather not take a chance on the seas behind the breakwater. From what I’ve heard, it can get pretty lumpy in there and I don’t want to wake up at 2AM and have to unraft.

RichCarterParticipantOh,
that looks easier to get to. The other spot looks more protected but its thin getting in there.Rich

RichCarterParticipantMy boat came with a cleat just forward of the gennoa track on the toe-rail. I don’t know if it came from the factory that way or if the first owner installed it. I put a short piece of stainless half-round on the edge of the toe-rail because the lines wear the woodwork. I put a similar piece of half-round for the bow-cleats. There’s nothing special about the cleat. Its the same type and size as the stern cleats. I don’t recommend using a cleat on the track for a boat the size of the 424.
I also put small cleats on three of the stanchions on each side to hang fenders. These work well.

I think we settled for July 8 and 9th. I’d like to know precisely where I’m headed. It sounds like the pond would be the best choice. Someone familiar with the anchorage should give some clear description of where we’ll meet, either lat/lon or some other clear description. If depth is an issue, some guidance on how to get safely in and out would be welcome. Information about a dinghy tieup and access to shore facilities would be helpful too.I have the whole month off so I may come down a day or two early. I hate to cruise to a schedule. Those who met a couple of years ago might remember the bad weather we had a couple of days before. I was forced to sail through some of it to get there in time because I had to leave later than I wished. I’ll likely leave Marblehead on the Tue Jul 5th. I should have no trouble getting there by Thursday.
Dinner out might be OK if we don’t get carried away and there’s a nice place convenient to the water. With a large group it can sometimes be difficult to arrange. Most restaurants are noisy and expensive but I’m flexible. The picnic area we had the last time was nice if something similar is available.
If those who are planning to come could please reply to the topic with boat name and number aboard we’d have a hull and head count.

RichCarterParticipantI faired the trailing edge of my rudder by adding a bit of fairing compound. This makes the rudder about a half-inch longer but wasn’t done to increase control. Extending the length sounds like a lot of work. The rudder is pegged with blocks at about 45deg to each side. I wonder if you would get more control by extending the travel a couple if inches by moving the stops rather than extending the length.

I stripped and applied a barrier coat last year. My rudder wasn’t gelcoated
either. I thought it was the result of an earlier repair not done right.
It and the rest of the bottom has been coated with five layers of barrier
coat.Rich
