Quote:John,Glad you found it. A clean engine is a happy engine and one that is easier to diagnose. Hopefully you don’t really have a shaft “break” and that the leak in your shaft “brake” remains sealed.
Happy cruising (aka “fixing boats in exotic locations”)

Quote:Thanks all….I spent some time cleaning the space out under the engine and found the source of the leak. I turns out it was from the shaft break (it uses oil pressure to disengage the break). This Exxon Validize size oil leak from the loose nut. Thanks again for the great advice. We are headed out tomorrow for Nevis and then on to Guadeloupe.

looking at in my Watermaker Comparison
spreadsheet<http://cid-221c83e75e672a96.office.live.com/view.aspx/.Public/WatermakerComparison.xlsx>
.The main debate I’m having with myself is DC or AC based systems. A DC based
system has to run much longer to make an equivalent amount of water to an AC
based system, but you can run it any time without starting a genset. An AC
based system would mean running the Honda EU2000 generator anytime we want
to make water including on longer passages. This is feeling more and more like one of those faith or belief based
decisions, as opposed to one that’s entirely gallonamp-hour based. One the
one hand with a DC based system we have the opportunity to leverage
alternative fuels (sun, wind, etc). With the Generator we’re always
committed to burning gas, LPG or Natural gas. We also would be committed to
managing the generator and running it on long passages (> 1week).I’m really torn on this one… I’m hoping there’s something I’m not seeing and
that you all might have some additional insight to help me make my decision. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts…

Participant3/4 of an inch. All the same. With the 5 by 20 ports ( Newfound Metal) plus teak spacer ring the bolts need to be 1 1/4 inch.

November 18, 2010 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Anybody know what kind of propeller for a 1979 Westerbeke? #76272joe shimkonis
Participantcheck out the campbell sail prop-West by North Enterprises-I replaced a folding
prop with it-it is very efficient, even in reverse-this is the 2nd 42′ sailboat
I’ve used them on.Very smooth,minimal vibration compared to a maxi-prop and less
stress on the transmission.Less drag than a typical 3 blade fixed-designed
specifically [machined] for sailboats.Nice descripton on the website-claim to
have the most efficient 3 blade fixed prop-I love it. They can help you size
one.You can’t use mine as an example since I have a 71 hp westerbeke.
They are normally smaller than a standard 3 blade fixed if sized properly-for
example -I went from a 19″ maxi to a 17″ guessing-maybe 15″ campbell.
You will need a prop lock system-I have one on my to do list-otherwise it can
and will rotate when sailing like any other non-folding prop.________________________________

ParticipantHi Pete,
I am really interested in your tank fabrication.I have a guy here that is
really good with boats and fiberglas and could probably fabricate a tank for
me.When will you share something with the association? Also- with all the work
you’re doing- coming back to the East Coast? soon?
Fuel tank-HERB- the tank can be cut up without violating the cradle.I had mine
sawzawed and had 2 tanks fabricated in Florida from the original mfgr.It allowed
me not to pull the engine.________________________________

ParticipantI purchased Bomar low profile hatches that were a good drop in fit for the
larger 2 hatches.I also replaced the smaller one over the galley with a slightly
smaller Bomar low profile-using half inch star board between the two to raise
the hatch one half inch but more importantly mount it.________________________________
