ParticipantTor: FYI, nice article on rope caulk in the July issue of Sail. So, you get paid to sit on your yacht, drink beer and advise. Nice! 😉

ParticipantAloha Thatcher: As a relative newcomer to this 424 crowd I want to thank you for your input over the last 5 years I’ve been an owner. Nice to have washed up on the same beach for a time!

ParticipantTor: Followed your anchor locker approach. I sealed up the anchor locker door and installed the diamond pattern non skid over it (matches the rest of the deck non skid). I did install a horizontal windlass unit though. Even put in an anchor wash down hose, which is accessed through its separate recessed container. Works great and looks like original equipment.

ParticipantWow! Just hauled out last March for a bottom job. These comments made me check my photos to see how she was blocked under the keel. The boys at Keehi Marine know their stuff as she was blocked fore and aft.
When I had her hauled for the purchase survey, they cared enough to send a snorkeler under to check sling placement. While out, they took pix of the bottom as reference for the next haul out. Great service.

ParticipantAloha Jason: Sailed a sloop rig for 20 years before I bought our 424 ketch. I’d never go back. Easy to handle when short handed and very well balanced with jib and jigger. Sailed in 30k with 10-12′ seas inter island and she handled it beautifully! I felt like that guy on the sub’s conning tower in Das Boot.

ParticipantKen: go to blockchek.com for the tool described. Easy to use and around $50 with free shipping if you get the kit plus an enlarged cover for the reservoir tank opening.

ParticipantAloha Bob: The elbow that is just aft of the dip stick turned out to be a drain/access (?) for the engine oil. I opened it and, yes, there was engine oil in there. Perhaps there was once an oil pressure gauge in there that a PO removed and replaced with a screw plug There are a couple of screw-out plugs further aft of the oil elbow that are flush with the block surface. I wonder if either of these are the coolant drain. Your thoughts?

ParticipantMy boat’s been in Hawai’i since new. Surprisingly, the original gel coat is still looking good. I use Collonite once or twice a year to keep a nice gloss on her. She was in day charter service before I bought her, so the paid crew probably keep her in great waxed shape.

ParticipantQuent: If your boat is #132 and it was built in ’81, then mine (#132) although titled as a 1980, must also have been built in “81. Am I right?

ParticipantI even plumbed the shower sump pump so that it could discharge from the bilge. Every bit helps.
