    Hi Paul,

That's exactly it – I leave the starboard side up for eating and working and it's still too big – I've been trying to think of a different arrangement where the settee is split with a table in the middle or something like that. But mine is solid teak with no laminate. It weighs about 200 pounds and worse, the fiddles on the leaves are wrong – they're backwards allowing whatever's on the table to not only fall off the edge but be launched in a ballistic arc.

Believe it or not, before I got my boat, the nav table didn't even have a fiddle at all!

Thanks for the info on your table set-up.

Bob – Why do you hate your table ( I assume it is the standard full one). Is it because even folded down, it is in the way. I assume standard position would be to have the starboard side always up. I take it that makes that settee difficult to use, unless you modify it the way Tor did. Is the port side folded down in the way at all.

    Hi Tor,

Did you laminate your table or did it come that way?

    Paul,

I cut the starboard wing of my salon table in half athwartship, something I'd seen on Robert & Dianna's 424, Silver Girl. I then trimmed the cut edges with a slat of wood and installed quick-release drop-leaf hinges, which I found online. This way, each half of the table wing can be used (or not) independently. I keep the forward half open all the time in port, that being my “office” corner. I generally keep the after half of the leaf folded down, which opens up that entire starboard settee for casual use, and flip it up for dining or when I need more table area in the “office.”

I like this arrangement so much I plan to do the same thing on the port side. It makes the table much easier to deal with, much less intrusive.

Everything popped right off except the bracket on the mast. I only had a screw driver with me and will need some power tools to get the bolts out of the mast. The whole things is in great shape and would be ready to install assuming our masts are the same. I would probably need to remove the laves from the main section prior to shipping.

If no one on the list could use it I’ll try and sell it here in Seattle but I figured I’d see if anyone on the list could make use of it before resorting to that.

    Hi Aaron,

My additional 4D is in the compartment aft of the water heater where there is also a group 31 for the starter battery. I'd send you a picture but the pile of parts is still too high to allow access (but it is getting smaller. Really.)

Where’s the additional 4d? Is there a box glassed in aft of the stock boxes?

I just keep staring at the void forward of the battery boxes and know I can get a lot more power into less space. That plus I’m miffed that I have to replace a 3 year old 4d AGM to the tune of $300 and am wondering if I would be a penny wise and pond foolish not replacing both at the same time, or just ripping everything out and staring fresh which is my inclination. 🙂

In my boat there was no thru-hull in that compartment, but there is a wire bundle and a pair of hoses leading to the water heater in the next compartment forward, plus a run of copper tubing and wires headed for the refrigerator. I had to cut new holes in the bulkheads fore and aft for all that stuff so they could be shifted enough to make space for the five Group 31 AGM batteries I installed. I cut a series of holes so I could move the bundles without disconnecting things, which saved me about a month's extra work. That compartment is an excellent space for sealed batteries, but not sufficiently ventilated for lead-acid batteries.

I actually thought about an MSC vessel, except for the duty cycle (the pay is actually quite good), which is nominally 4 months out, a month back, but because of the need for men and ships usually turns out to be 4 months out, 4 months out….

    Bob,

If it's any consolation, in the course of researching this I read in another sailors' blog that the MMD is good for PX shopping. These stories get started and just keep going. Perhaps it used to be the case, as with a captain's license getting you into VA hospitals. Or maybe one or two MMD holders have actually gotten into a PX when an ID checker didn't know the rules well enough. Even the Commander's assistant apparently had to research the subject before responding to my query.

But all is not lost. All you need to do is sign onto a Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessel. Then you can shop in the PX to your heart's content!

answer, which basically amounts to “no,” is below. Now, you might get lucky and gain entry to some PX's
with a MMD ID card simply because the local manager or cashier doesn't know the rule covering it, but as
you can see below the official policy does not accept MMD's except in very specific circumstances.

I think it's 50/50/50. But since I don't have a way to measure water in, I had to take the PO's word for it. I may have it in my original (yes, original) owners manual. I'll look if you like.

    Hi Rich,

No, just the MMD card. The Masters is useless for this, and the TWIC will allow you to get onto a commercial pier. The MMD card means you're a Merchant Mariner.

    Hi,

No, I have to go get the TWIC – I've pre-registered but need the time to get there. The MMD card without any further training is for the OS – you have to go to school and pay a lot for that for the AB.

    Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the nice words – I've been so busy with the boat that I've not kept it up.

I did, indeed, leave the old winches for several reasons – one, I may get a spinnaker, and two, I the big winches are good for kedging where the anchor windlass is not.

I set the new winches as far outboard as I could, as close to the rigging as I could and still operate the 10″ handles comfortably and so I could sit on the coaming when sailing. The only one that needed a turning block is the port one and like Tor on Silver Heels, it was a simple cheek block mounted just aft of the mizzen stay. I also added a rubstrake on the angle of the coaming to keep the line from rubbing through the gelcoat.

The starboard side doesn't need a block because the line wraps outboard.

I struggled with the idea of putting one on both sides for symmetry, but didn't. It would be expensive symmetry.

The hailer is sitting on my aft bunk. It will go on my mizzen below the radar. The TV antenna will go above the radar. The new radio has a remote mic on the sternrail. Very easy to use.

Here's what I learned with the pulpits:

    1. Measure, measure, measure. Then measure again – I set the first hole the same by measuring from the mast and all the stays, then marked the same place on the other side. It will be close. I also moved mine aft so that they are even with the mast because I want to use my staysail without flogging it on the mast rails.

    2. Patience is a virtue. Really. Don't use 5 minute epoxy. Devcon makes a really cool 2500# epoxy with injector that automatically mixes it as it's injected. True, you need a mess of them, but the convenience was amazing. But they take 30 minutes to set. Wait the 30 minutes. Really.

    3. When you put the 4200UV to bed the rails don't try to clean it up. Wait till it cures. Much easier.

Other than that, it's all good. I'll be posting the winch pictures and the rail pictures right soon.

When you installed the new winches, I take it that you left the old ones in place? Have you sailed with them yet? If so where’d you mount blocks?

You mentioned installing your VHF, did you also put a hailer horn on the mast? Is it protected from the foresail with a radar antenna, or something else? I’m definitely anxious to see the pulpits!
