ParticipantSteve-
I agree with what Bob said. However, you didn’t indicate if the coolant was plain water or antifreeze. If it was a significant amount of antifreeze, you need to flush it out of the bearings as antifreeze is a really poor lubricant.

ParticipantHi Phil
Message me your address and I’ll try to get it out early next week.

ParticipantFound it. Titled Pearson 424 ketch lifting plan, 11 Aug 2008. Thanks, Tor!

ParticipantGreat advice, thanks guys. I’ll be shopping for a different yard. Maybe hand them a picture without comment, and go for coffee!
Best regards,

ParticipantActually, didn’t have a problem with the servicing except for the price going up between the estimate and the bill. My problem was with the equipment original to the raft. They gave it back to me without comment when I picked up the raft. Bottom line, if you abandon ship, bring your own flashlight!

ParticipantHey, Bob-
Good decision. Don’t mess with something that works. My suggestion about that lift raft recert based on experience: Get a firm price up front, in writing, and don’t let them use crappy Chinese batteries.

ParticipantRe Watermaker, correction: SK informed me that DC unit not convertible to AC.
Asking $800. A new membrane is $200, so this is an almost new watermaker for about $1,000.

ParticipantHey Tor-
Maybe put the money into one of those flexible rubber fuel tanks instead of the Bermudan economy.
Flew into Bermuda a couple times, and crewed back. Dialogue here confirms wisdom of sailing other people’s boats. Plus it is much easier to find North America than it is Bermuda.

ParticipantInfo on the model DC 150 watermaker can be found here:
http://www.yachtmate.com/pdf/sk-watermakers-brochure.pdfIt appears that the DC motor could be swapped for an AC motor and run from a small Honda if you don’t have an economical source of 12 volt DC.
This unit cost me $2800 in 2003, will sell for a fraction of that.

ParticipantHi Jack-
No deals or after market versions that I could find. We paid $600 about 12 years ago, probably they have doubled the price since then.
Is it leaking?

ParticipantThe Comnav guy selling the NX wireless wind transducer says that it would not easily connect to Classic Nexus but could be made to work with a NX2 server with some modification. However, the on line Nexus manual for the product which is referenced in the eBay ad said that it would work with all the Nexus servers.
Enough doubt that the $400 will stay in my pocket, I think. Will try to fix my old unit that got stuck courtesy of Sandy.

ParticipantSage advice from Rich. I would start by disconnecting the cable at the transmission end and see if the control lever moved any easier. At least then you would know if the bind is in the control cable or is in the transmission.

ParticipantSteve-
Sorry to hear that you have a problem after so much effort to get the head. Unless you are really ready to move on to a new engine, you might want to talk to the guy at Gaskets to go on the Internet. They specialize on making special one off head gaskets.
You might also want to have a machine shop check the new head to make sure that it is milled flat.
A third possibility is check in at SOMRAD website. They know some stuff about diesels.
Good luck!

ParticipantRe running w/o water cooling, certainly worth considering.
Rich-
Is it possible that Walter put some kind of coating on the RV-26 cooling passage?
I can report one idea that doesn’t work. I tried installing a zinc in the RV-20 cooling passage. Pieces of zinc tore up my pump impellor, then clogged the heat exchanger. Hard explaining that one to the Admiral!
