My thought on wireless instruments is the same as I feel about wireless networking. They are great when you can’t run a wire, when you can run a wire you going to get a more reliable connection with less interference and data dropping.
If you have perfect rigging and want to install everything from a bosun’s chair then TackTick might be a good mid-term option. If you’re going to have the rig down I’d run the wire.

OK, by everyone I mean… enough to build a system. That’s critical mass has now been reached.
I did email cruzpro to ask when they were going to have their NMEA 2000 gear out. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.

0183 was never really followed strictly as a standard both at the protocol or the hardware level, so I’m not going to introduce any of it into my system.
Everyone will have their NMEA 2000 gear out shortly…

Let me put this out there too… anyone have any thoughts on using a fishfinder verses a normal depth only type transducer? Seems like power draw is the only real negative.

I’m not sure if I’ll actually do that entire NMEA network, I’m probably going to go with a more analog water tank gauge system, like a Hart or a DIY hart system. I’m just in the “thinking out loud” stages of this operation, but as a geek (I have worked for Microsoft and now F5 Networks) I have to have my toys. 😉

I have heard both NEVER put the GPS up there and that some (Maretron included) are fine up there. My reason for thinking about going that way is to eliminate things in and around the cockpit as much as possible. So much stuff piling up around ther anyway. Another ideas was to put it on the mizzen spreader. If I redo the bimini and stern pulpit on Deep Playa then I could put in a dedicated mount for some of there things. I’m not 100% decided either way, that’s why it’s nice to hear all the input from everyone.

My completely ignorant guess is…. A straight one will fit the boat as-is a curved one will be a “project”.

For one with little knowledge of this (I’ve never had to replace a traveler before) why is a flat track better than a curved one? I looked at the Gerhauer site and they do have a curved one. I guess I would go with the SS wedges if I go “flat”.

I am curious if you consulted with your local Cummins shop regarding the likely background story or even better conversed with the seller.

I’m always very wary of “great deals”. 😉

    Hi Pat,

I send 2 or 3 emails to the group yesterday afternoon, none of which appear to have gotten through. I don’t
think I did anything differently from emails I’d sent in the morning, which did get posted. Did the server
drop Silver Heels for some reason?

    Thanks,

This is a test. This is only a test (because my last few emails to the group never showed up). If this were an
actual emergency this station would broadcast a long, loud, annoying tone for 30 seconds.

Did they tell you what kind of plastic it’s made from (or if the exact kind matter much)? It might something you could order in a sheet and just it out yourself, but I’m kind of guessing at that one.
You could google for a local Plastics shop. TAP Plastics is a place that has been talked about my local friends, but I’ve not been there for anything yet. They’re a W. Coast chain.

There was (is?) a P424 Sloop that has a stainless steel cap rail (see pics). Looks awesome in the pics. I imagine it was god awful expensive and would a real toe burner outside the cloudy Pacific NW.

Here’s a pic of my setup.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/deepplaya/3605668017/

I didn’t find a straight home depot drop in. I used a ShurFlo mixer. I don’t have the part number handy, but I could find it if you want it. It’s nice and small. I bought a wall elbow from my local plumbing store along with a handheld shower. In order to mount the elbow to the thin fiberglass bulkhead I took a piece of 1/4″ plywood and epoxied it on all sides to seal it well and used it as a backing plate. You will also need fittings (or clamps) to attach the hoses to the new mixer and a length of hose and fittings (or clamps) to attach the mixer to the faucet.

Getting all the right pieces is the hard part, the putting together is pretty easy.

My PO had added a hose to the bottom of the oil pan which was slightly more useful and probably just as messy as going in with a pump into the dipstick. The connection point for that is on the starboard side of the engine.
Here’s a shot of the end of that hose: http://www.flickr.com/photos/deepplaya/3260788951/
