I have Lewmar 55 ST’s mounted as in the picture.

I have learned to put my left hand, palm down, over the top of my right hand which I’m grinding with so my left hand forces the lifeline up and over my hands and allow me to make a full turn. It’s a tad annoying… and now that you remind me of that.. winch locations and sheeting for jib and spinnaklers; now on on the list. If I move the stern pulpit outboard to the toerail (more likely that I thought) it will probably clear that up.

I don’t know about the rest of you folks, but there are many times I wish my winches were bigger. I fly a 150% gennoa. I find that the relatively short 424 rig needs the extra sail area. When sheeting in the headsail when close-hauled in anything other than a light breeze I find the last few feet to be a bear.

A longer handle hits the dodger frame. Unless the handle were very long, it wouldn’t provide much improvement anyway. Even the speed-shift handle is too short to make much of a difference. I’ve considered replacing the winches, but the cost of a new pair of winches is several boat units. I’ve got Lewmar 46 winches. I’d have to go to Lewmar 50 winches at about $5k/pr to gain enough leverage to sheet in the headsail. Larger winches are taller too, so I’d have to raise the lifelines or the handle won’t clear. This means new stanchions.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this?

How many others out there wish their winches were more powerful?

Who out there is satisfied with your winch and what model do you have?

    Pat,

Yes, that’s exactly what I used. I’ll take a photo when I get back out to the boat a little later. Running some shore errands now (including some wi-fi at the local coffee shop, since the signal in the harbor is even flakier than usual).

Good grief, were you really up & emailing at 3 AM? Got Sominex?

    🙂

Hey Tor, do you have a picture of the front side of that fitting? Is it basically something like this:

Here’s a photo of the stainless backing plate I put in to spread the stress of that stem pad eye.

Hey Tor, Did you ever order your windvane? I’d be interested in ordering one as well. Can we get three more boats and work up to a discount?

Maybe we can find some similar boats and up the numbers some more.

    Patrick,
If Navtec has a recall it should be one their website and/or their tech support number (they are still in business – right?). Navtec did have a recall on their turnbuckles in the 70s to replace the bottle screw.
If the turnbuckles are original and you’re going through a major refit, might as well put them on the list as well.

    Love spending other people’s money.

I’ve been meeting with some yards to go over my big list of projects and one of them (Seaview in Seattle, WA) said that the Navtec turnbuckles in my rigging (original I assume) had been recalled. I’m not sure if there’s any truth in that and was curious if any of you had more information.

I have put out all 200′ of chain almost every time I’ve anchored here in Puget sound, but I have found I’m frequently the co-center of the raft up with another friend also setting out all chain in the oposite direction and then our less well equipped buddy boats tying to us and maybe some additional rodes depending on the weathertides.

As for the flex… I always set up a snubber off the bow cleat. It’s a single line with a wichard anchor hook splieced in to one end. It was my first splice and she’s held up well thus far. I wish I had made a bridal instead of the single line, but when I get my bow padeye I’ll use that instead 99% of the time anyway.

If this is a “religious” discussion then AMEN, Tor! This is the right idea. In greater depths, a hybrid rode is preferable. 200Ft of chain paid out is too heavy and does not offer enough flex to absorb kinetic energy.

I hear on the convenience factor… but this way my girlfriend and I can work out schlepping anchors since she’s a certified strength and conditioning coach she’ll be happy for me to get the workout.

Totally agree on the padeye on the bow. It was already on my refit list. 😉

I know sorry about the vagueness… it’s nice to be able to think out loud and here other opinions.

Maybe the better way for me to think about this are there any ways I can’t anchor without dual bow rollers that I can with dual bow rollers and I can’t think of anything…. It’s really just convenience I guess. I can always swap out anchors or buy another anchor if I’m having problems with certain types of holding, but that doesn’t mean I have to always have two anchors on the bow.

    Thanks,

If you properly attach a snubber to your anchor rode and then cleat off on the bow cleat then slack the anchor rode you shouldn’t have ANY significant force on your anchor platform.

The C-120 understands the following protocols:
    NMEA 0183
    SeaTalk
    SeaTalk2/NMEA2000

You just need to find a device that connects to your engine’s analog wiring harness and then re-transmit the data to the C120.
The Maretron andor the Cruz Pro links we sent our yesterday would all probably work, but you should talk to someone who has done it or someone who installs these and can tell you for sure.

I don’t have any of those worth keeping. I stand corrected on one thing. I will need an 0183 converter to hook to my ICOM VHF. I actually feel bad about that, but I had no VHF and that wasn’t OK with me and I’m kind of an ICOM bigot so I bought ICOM.
The 0183 converter for the ICOM is on my maretron drawings.
