ParticipantMy 1980 boat has a three blade 18′ LH 12 on a 1.5″ shaft. I don’t know if it’s original.

ParticipantLee: Curious as to how many boat units the spars refurbishing cost. Can you give a directional?
I guess I’m approaching that costly line in the sand when you’re done fixing existing problems and move to fixing anticipated ones as we get Lady Leanne ready for some extended offshore work.

ParticipantTor: Definitely don’t want to get tangled up in my underwear. I’ll certainly check the play on all before I get out the drill!.

ParticipantTor: Interestingly, the weld on the tang held. It snapped in half horizontally across the hole. I filed down the rough edges for obvious reasons.
I kind of like the idea of a pad eye on the rear coming if I can keep it out of the way.

ParticipantTor:
We loved it there and bought a patch of dirt on Solarte, just across the bay. The only thing we could charter there was a small houseboat, so we putted around the string of islands for a couple of weeks. We checked out the marina by boat, but never found out rates, etc. It did look comfortable though.
I don’t know if you’re aware, but you can get the Bocas Breeze paper on line.
I’m jealous.

Just curious. Did you make it up to Bocas del Toro? You mentioned cruising up the coast in your meanderings.

ParticipantThanks for all the advice. The windlass I’m considering is the Maxwell HRC 10-10. It draws 120 amps @ 12 volts. My college student son at U of Hawai’i, is now a part time employee at West (YEA…..big discount) so all costs are manageable. From forum responses, it seems as though a dedicated battery with shorter big cable runs might be less expensive. On the other hand, there are considerations about the charging capabilities of a house run set up. My horizons are expanding! I appreciate all comments!

ParticipantLady Leanne presently has a Lasdrop (first generation) that has been on there for several years. When I bought her, the surveyor squeezed the rubber sleeve and thought it was a little tender and advised me to replace it. The cost to replace it is almost half of the cost of a new unit, so I am going to stick the latest one in there.
One of Lasdrop’s argument is that packing allows a small bit of water in the bilge, that mixes with contaminants that are then pumped overboard. The unit presently on board has worked well. Now the only water that gets in the bilge is from blind overfill of the water tanks.
I believe the outside rubber sleeve of the Lasdrop fits over the stern tube with clamps (memory) and that is why I need the stern tube diameter.

ParticipantWalter: Where is Madness berthed and sailed. Patrick’s note about cool water makes me curious where Madness is enjoying the cool V Drive temp. My yacht’s in Honolulu and I just rebuilt the V-Drive last fall. I would like to drop the raw water cooling also.

ParticipantQuent: I had previously replaced the thermostat with a NAPA one and she ran great (170-180). The uneven cooling started after that. I wonder if it might be zinc sludge. When I pulled the heat exchanger for cleaning, the zinc that was in there was half gone. My engine guy mentioned something about a powerful cleaner that can unclog the passage. I will share the brand name once I find out what he’s going to use.

ParticipantReworking the anchoring system on Lady Leanne has been on my “to do” list for a while as I have had other more salient issues to deal with. Up until now, we have been sailing her from the dock in Ke’ehi Lagoon as we became familiar with the boat and Hawaiian waters. We are now at the point where we plan to cruise to Molokai’i and Maui this winter and anchoring has become a priority. Patrick’s timely inquiry and the subsequent discussion have now motivated me to “get into” this now.
Lady Leanne has an anchor platform and 2 rollers for the Danforth and plow on board. Most people here cruise with 2 plows or CQRs. Your chain/line mixes and lengths sound appropriate to me and I would like to view your pictures so I can understand how best to stow them. Please email me at: dan.kalinowski@comcast.net
