    Hi Pete,

    Check this out:

    http://shopping.rexmar.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=stainless-rubrail

I think it’s what you’re looking for and it’s fairly reasonably priced.
They also make the end caps.

    Hey, Pete,

Usually the rub rail (since bronze went out of style) is not solid – it’s a
stamped or rolled product with the holes already drilled. It’s far less
expensive and not so heavy, either. Let me see if I can find a source for
    it.

Hi Eric, that sounds pretty much my idea. I don’t think the difference in
dinghy length will be too much.

What stern ladder do you have, and can you use it with the dingy raised?

    Hi All!

Well, I’ve sold my Monitor wind vane (thanks to Patrick I got a great

Here’s my question – how far apart should the davits be, or, where have

    you

put yours with respect either to the center of the stern rail or the
uprights? Do you also have a stern ladder?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

By the way, the best deal I could get for the davits were from Martek in
Florida where their davits with the bottom fitting and backing plates and
rail mounting hardware were $1098 (1.25″ tubing, 300lb rating for each

    arm)

    – they provided free shipping for products over $1000 (saving $79) plus

    $100

off so that the total price was $998. I got the lifting gear from

    Garhauer

for $350 because it’s prettier than the Ronstan stuff Martek and comes

    with

everything (Martek charges for the blocks – $200, lines $150, and rail
mounted cam cleats $90). Garhauer provides the whole six part tackle

    with

    the rail mounted cam cleats.

I purchased the solar panel, a 12V, 135 watt Kyocera with shipping was

    $470

from Northern Arizona Wind & Sun. Unbelievable how much solar panels

    have

    come down!

Although Martek supplies cross members (stabilizer bars), I purchased
fittings from Marine Parts Depot who supplies good SS fittings at very

    low

prices, and I’ll get the tubing from the metals place, Vulcan Metals,

    near

me, where you purchase metal by the pound. Very reasonable.

I’ll be providing pictures as the project continues.

Thanks for any measurements you can provide!

tell you that it does not work too well having the arms far apart when you
have a smaller dinghy. So, I guess it would depend on the size of your
dinghy and where you intend to lift it from that will determine the distance
    apart.

    Hi Pete,

I’m sure you’ve figured this out. Sadly, you can run one or the other aft
with no difficulty, but not both given the small space allowed for it on
    deck.

Actually, if you don’t have a staysail, you might be able to do it.

I have on either side two stacked turning blocks – right now, I use the port
side for a preventer for the main boom and the staysail sheet. The other
side is a downhaul for the spinnaker and the boom vang.

If you have single line reefing (which I don’t but you’re actually making me
think about) and you don’t use the same kind of preventer (a line led to the
stem head fitting and back to the end of the boom) and you don’t have a
spinnaker down haul, you could conceivably run the main halyard and reefing
    line back.

As far as reinforcing the deck goes, that’s what the rod in front of the
    mast is for,

However, realize that it stacks the lines on each side which you may not
    like.

    Hi Tor,

Sadly I agree with both of you – the captain and crew have a choice. True,
it’s a well traveled path and should be protected to some extent but it’s
not the Royal Navy’s problem. Until the UN Security Council comes up with a
plan, it’s catch as catch can there. But it is avoidable.

To Rich’s point – I agree with the blockade idea – honestly, a better idea
is to turn Somalia into an ashtray but not politically expedient.

Sadly, for Somalia, there is no penalty for their actions. A 200 mile no
travel zone around their coast would be a start.

However, once again, an easy, cheap, and effective solution is not the one
we take (we being humans). Instead of an international effort to air drop
food, clean water and medical supplies in such great quantities that it’s
impossible to confiscate it all we’d prefer to use military force because
it’s so much cooler. I mean, what’s the point of having weapons if you
    can’t deploy them?

From my perspective, why did the US Navy wait until there was gunfire? It’s
clear that negotiation doesn’t really work with these pirates (that’s why
they’re pirates). Our forces could swim over by night, take the vessel
quietly by force. The result might have been the same but it might not
    have, too.

It’s sad that a little pissant country can cause so much consternation but
in an increasingly shrinking world there is no place for a country like
    that.

Excuse me, but I thought the captain of a boat is responsible for the
safety of his vessel. Those cruisers chose to sail in some of the most

the pirates for the murders, not the Royal Navy. But above all I blame
the yacht captain for choosing to place his boat, his crew and himself –
unnecessarily! – in a situation known to be extremely dangerous.
Similarly, the individuals who chose to accompany the captain in those
notoriously dangerous waters were not forced to do so. They each made
their choice, and it was a bad one.

Call me callous, but I believe each of us is responsible for our
decisions and the consequences of those decisions, not some government
agency. It’s called being a grown-up, and it’s the price of freedom. And
that goes double for a captain.

If you’re getting some rattle at low speeds don’t worry. If whine at high
speeds, go to gear oil instead of 30wt. Like 50wt or even 80 wt.

Remember, these drives are usually hooked up to big noisy gasoline engines
so you don’t hear them. Also, those engines idle faster than diesels.
