I also have the same cooler configuration on my W58.

If you saw oil in the exhaust there’s only so many ways it could get there. One of the most likely is from the cooler. I recently spoke with a diesel mechanic who insisted that oil and transmission coolers like this have a relatively finite life span, a concept that was new to me. He claimed that in the BW certification class he took the instructor was quite definite that anything over 7-8 years these coolers are on borrowed time. If like mine, yours is original then according to him it’s way overdue for failure.

The problem could also be the head gasket but I’m leaning toward the cooler.

It is puzzling that the oil level hasn’t dropped but the drop in oil pressure is very troubling. Could just a small amount of oil caused the effect in the exhaust you saw?

I measured the shaft and the taper in detail. It seemed to match the specs of a standard shaft taper I found online. I still have the original bronze shaft.

I have bypassed my v-drive cooling but just splashed a couple of weeks ago and haven’t yet cranked the engine. I made the change based on reports from a couple of forum members that had done it some time ago and had no problems and one owner I’ve met a couple of times with the same experience. I don’t recall hearing anyone that had a problem after the change.

Well not for you or most others but for someone with a busted Beckson port and no budget for new SS ports then it might be just what they were looking for.

I love my New Found Metals ports. All stainless. Solid construction. Good support from teh maker. No leaks.

I think I have added photos of one of the Beckson ports I’m removing. This one is pretty representative of them all. The lens is a bit yellowed from age and sun but clear with very little scratching.

The hinges, tabs and latches are all good with no breaks or cracks.

I have five removed so far with five more to go. Anyone interested I would like $40 each.

OK. Have a photo of one of my Beckson ports. Let’s see if I can add the photos.

The worst as I mentioned were the stanchions next to the lifeline gates. The wet and rotted areas were odd shaped, like a Rorschach inkblot, so deeper in one direction than the other at the same base.

Several I had to route out the entire area between the four bolt holes in the deck. To the sides the worst case a couple of channels that went maybe 3 inches or a bit more up under the deck. Most only about an inch.

I also left the holes open for a few weeks to let any remaining moisture evaporate. Covered the holes on the deck and left them open on the underside. Fortunately I had pretty good access to underside on all of them but may be different on the 424 (I have the 422).

One area that was really bad I drilled a few access holes a few inches away from the base from the underside and taped a vacuum cleaner hose to the holes and let it suck dry air through for a while. Then put a space heater (on low) under it for a while to make sure.

I think it solved the problems but ask me about it in a few years.

Same here. All my side decks are balsa cored. Also redid all my stanchion bases and none were done properly; all bedded with silicone and many, especially the ones next to the lifeline gates, were leaking and the core wet or rotten. Fortunately not too far for most of them but still a bit of a pain.

While I was at it I replaced the little fiberglass backing pads with larger backing plates of stainless.

I just splashed last month after six years parked under a tree in the woods. I don’t know exactly when or where but I’m sure going somewhere as soon as I get the engine running.

Will be happy to post reports and send pictures. 🙂

Are the lens in good shape? Mine are so scratched as to be opaque. I put NFM ports in a Little Westerly Jouster in Singapore and really liked them; may be on my project list.

Will check the lenses on the Becksons. As I recall they were clear with little scratching. Dusty and dirty from sitting in a box in the shed but nothing a little water won’t fix. Will check them out this weekend.

    Hello,

If you were asking about my teak trim pieces, from NFM for their 5X12 standard ports.

    Could you confirm the size?

    Hi Mark,

Sorry for the delay in my reply. Having problems with my email supplier (ATT who is really being a pain) on top of boat stuff. Stepped the mast, installed new roller furler, finishing the engine, mast wiring, on and on.

Read my previous posts and not sure I made perfect sense. Just to be clear, the teak trim pieces I have are for the New Found Metals 5X12 SS ports. I can send photos. They were stained to match the Pearson interior and mostly do except some of the teak pieces were cut from much lighter wood that didn’t take the stain as well.

Not sure how to email the photos direct. Will tinker with the forum a bit to see if I can figure it out. Or I can post them here.

If your Beckson ports are shot, have broken latches or such, I saved mine from the NFM replacement project. All tabs, hinges, etc are good.

    Hi Tor,

Been offline for a while. Finally launched (after six years on the hard) and been busy getting the mast stepped, new Harken installed, final engine details, etc, etc, etc.

Ewan and I have been going back and forth on the email issue. Problem seems to be with my ISP %$@#$%^$#%!!!! ATT. They are blocking pearson424.org emails and several others that I regularly correspond with and I can’t get anyone at ATT to help. Time to change.

    Hi Tor,

Wish I could answer that but I haven’t gotten any forum emails for weeks. Started to wonder where everyone went so logged into the site only to find business as usual.

I checked my profile and I am signed up to receive emails but doesn’t seem to be happening.
