Know that you have company. That was probably the one of the main reasons
for my repower. After being able to look inside of the fresh water pump
through the hole rusted away from salt spray, and then looking at the cost
of parts a new engine just made sense. I think my spray was from the raw
water pump but I did have to replace all of the exhaust a few years before
the repower. That was actually very easy and cheap, being that it was made
of black pipe parts.Linus

I know you all probably know how to run that hose easily but when I replaced
the head hose I was having trouble getting it to make the turn under the
floor. There was only a couple inches where the hose came down between the
floor and the hull. My wife came up with the idea of running a line through
the new hose and tying it off at the back end. I was able to reach over
with a vacuum cleaner hose and grab the line and pull it over to the hatch.
As she pushed I could lift the hose up over the stringer (or whatever the
half pipe tabbed to the hull is) by pulling on the line forcing it to make
the bend. I also found that the PO had replaced the hose before and had
just left the old one in there, once it was removed it made things much
easier.I’ll never sell my boat because I couldn’t stand to be the infamous PO.

Another question from the ignorance spot. Will the breakers work if there
is no ground?Linus

If the shore power is not grounded to the DC ground is it safe when you use
inverter or generator AC current? I read Calder’s book and he suggested
that hooking it up that way could be done yet he countered it later in the
same paragraph. What is the ground when not hooked up with a shore power
cable? I am asking out of ignorance. I understand enough to know I don’t
know like Tor said.Linus

The thermostat is the cheapest and the easiest so that’s where I start, being cheap and lazy. I hope it’s not the pump, not cheap or easy. Mine even had holes rusted in the top from what looked like salt spray from a leaky raw water pump over many years when I bought the boat. There wasn’t much left of the outer case of the pump but it was enough to keep it going. If you have hoses that go to the hot water heater disconecting the return line and putting it in a bucket will let you know how much flow you have or just check if you have hot water at a sink would be easier I guess.

ParticipantWell you see I started by getting pissed cause the engine would overheat.
After the repower the project list has become almost a refit. Two years
later I am looking at the short rows. The only thing that really gets me is
you can’t see any of it without taking half of the boat apart. Well as the
French might say “sea la vive”. Let’s go sailing.Linus

You painted the old wall paper? How much paint did it soak up? That sounds
a lot easier than the alternative. Mine is a brown, green, blue that you
had to be deep into the 70’s to enjoy. Maybe on a mental health day the
colors went together better.Linus

ParticipantPat brings up a point I wanted to ask before painting the cubbies. Is there
any reason that the foam backed material was used other than it is easy to
spray glue and roll out?
I have used a surface prep called Will Bond followed with Kilz and gloss
white from Lowe’s. Looks great but only one year old. I used this in the
cubbies behind the setee that were already white. Now it’s time to do the
ones that I stripped the foam out of. It would be easy to put back a
similar material but it seem to encourage mildew by holding moisture. Any
thoughts would be great.Linus

ParticipantI have used the reefed jib and mizzen in lighter air to park the boat for
the kids to go swimming. The boat just sat almost still and there was a
calm spot on the lee of the boat for the kids to play around in. It worked
well and I would think it would be better with a stay sail in heaver seas
with a reef in the mizzen.Linus

I pulled mine several years ago had the frames powder coated and replaced the glass. I believe that it was Lexan. I contacted Bomar and they suggested the type of glass and I got it at a local glass shop. I can’t remember what the name of the glazing compound that they told me I had to use. I believe that it was GE Ultraglaze it was the stickiest stuff that I have ever seen I recomend taping off the glass inside and out. It is difficult to tool and sticks to everything that it comes near. The powder coat was not worth it to me. I have had to touch up with paint but all in all they are better than when I started. No leaks and I can see through them.

How did you adapt the bulbs to the screw in type bases? The link takes me to lights with two pins on the back. Is there an adapter or do you solder them into an old bulb base?

ParticipantI’ve emailed them and they knocked off $75 to match the ebay price but I was hoping for a little more. It is boat show season and I can dream.

Once again you are the master! Inspiration just when it was needed most.
We’ve had snow, cold and rainy dreary days for a much longer time than is
normal here I had almost given up. Tomorrow it’s off to the boat to try to
be ready for the warm when it finally gets here.Linus

Must you rub it in. Also I think that you do have some amazing canvas work on Silver Heels. I think that this year my big cast off will be occupying your old mooring for a few weeks. I am stuck to the dock with the comfort of being able to walk in to the house or work shop. I need to cast off the lines and shake out the wasp’s nests with what I got now till I can afford the rest of the up fit. At least now I can motor to Look Out or Okracoke that was not an option before.
