I’m a test manager by job title but a program manager by genetics. We’re all geeks in some way. 😉

    Hi Pat,

Believe it or not, so can I. That sort of thing was my job for a long time, including programming and database design. The problem is that like the cobbler’s children, I can’t face working on my own site – that’s why I use blogger. I’m just too lazy…

Yeah right now we’re unbolting the mast step from the boat using and impact wrench and then they’re going to raise it and cut it off or knock it off. I already planned for a new step in mind so it’s not a big deal, just the labor… luckily labor is 20% off at the yard right now.

If your stick has not been removed for several years, it may be impossible to get it out in one piece. We had a thread about this a year ago or so. I helped a guy at my club yard remove his main mast. We used a large crane. We successfully lifted the boat about two feet out of the water with no sign of the mast coming free. The owner ended up cutting the base of the mast off using a sawzall.

The mast step is iron and it sits in the bilge. It will rust. In the process it swells and clamps around the mast base. The base is made of aluminum. It corrodes and forms a bond with the iron.

After cutting the mast as low as you can, you can remove the mast step and glass in a step. The new step will be a few inches higher than the old step. Make the hight difference the same measurement as what you cut off.

If I were looking to relocate my tank, I’d think I’d go for the flat area along the bilge aft of the mast, or the sewer.

Do you like the color now? Or do you like burgundy? Go with what your heart says. I’m always tempted to go with shark white or better yet, copper color. But that’s just me. What color is your boottop stripe? Cove stripe? If it’s burgundy, then put a white line below your boottop of 3/4″ to 1″ and then paint the bottom burgundy.

    How’s that for an answer?

I have an ESPAR D8LC that came with the boat. It works well. My only lessons to share would be don’t use that paper tubing they come with, use something less likely to tear or chafe. I’d use something like this Trident Polyduct which is what I plan to use to replace one of my torn hoses. http://www.tridentmarine.com/stage/acduct.htm

    Hello Everybody,

I wanted to post the pics of the solent stay that came with Xanadu when I purchased her. The head is attached just below the forstay and the bottom is attached on the stem head. It connects with a fitting that has a lever action called a hiemlim lever, I think or something like that. It conects in about 30 seconds and when not in use it secures by the mast out of the way. The only sail that I have for it is a hank on storm sail that has never been used. The sheets for the storm sail run through two blocks mounted on the coach roof inboard of the grab rails just forward of the mast. They go from there in a direct line to the sheet winches in the cockpit. In the pics I didn’t have the storm sail hoisted, but I lead the sheets through the blocks and to the winches.

I hope the pics turn out all right, this is the first time I have done this. If you need more pics that are clearer, let me know and I

I can see you’re running windows server. In that case you should check out http://www.dotnetblogengine.net/ that’s what I use on my site, pretty easy to setup. You could just it up as the “updates” page and use it just like you’re doing now, but there’d be an RSS feed. Or you could send out your updates from Twitter.

In thjose pics is the autohelm rudder fully deployed? Looks like you’re not using about 1/3 of the rudder.

    Patrick,

Here are a few photos of the Auto-Helm on Silver Heels. I specifically set it up so I can use it while carrying my dinghy on the davits. Towards that end, I made the airvane platform as you see it. Also shown is a mock-up of how I’m now setting up the Autohelm tiller pilot to steer via the Auto-Helm’s rudder. I’m fabricating a mount for it (in lieu of the green sponge) and will connect the tiller pilot’s drive arm to the rudder’s trim tab control yoke via steering cables that the factory is making up for me.

Among the Auto-Helm’s many virtues is the fact that it provides a second steering system totally independent of the boat’s system. The two are not connected at all. No lines into the cockpit, etc.

    Hi Patrick.

We understand you are interested in a windvane for your Pearson 424.

We have registered over twenty Monitor windvane shipments to Pearson 424 sailors and supplied one Auto-Helm windvane to your friend, Mr. Tor Pinney. I have attached to this email, the installation drawings for both the Monitor and Auto-Helm for you to look over and consider. You can view photos of Pearson 424 Monitor and Auto-Helm installations on our website: http://www.selfsteer.com/boats/view.php?boatTypeID=1650

Would you like to look at a Monitor DVD, and Auto-Helm and Monitor brochures? Please send me your address and I will be glad to mail them to you.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

    Best Regards – Kopi Carmine
