SpectatorYou all have covered the points about power consumption, safety if there’s an electrical failure or autopilot fairly brilliantly let me briefly add two other points.
Many windvanes can also function as an emergency rudder either as they come or with an add-on. Read about the options your considering and ask about that. The Ayer’s is a functional rudder as-is. The Monitor uses the transom mount to host their SOS Rudder (another boat unit or three in cost). The others are all of the place too. There’s no standard answer here.
QUIET. I love the peacefulness of sailing. Keeping that engine from being turned on is a goal. 🙂
But like Robert said, its all personal preference really.

SpectatorYes, that was definitely a hamper. I have the factor original (I guess) hamper bag, but the PO wrote their boat name on it so its in the garage. I’m going to use old sails to make a new bag some day.
I also saw one P424 that had put in a racks to hold SCUBA tanks under their hamper bag. I don’t have a link to that unfortunately.

SpectatorFor Ham Radio Gear reviews you can’t beat this site:
Here’s the HF rig section: http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/14
Direct link to the 707: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/565The only things to keep in mind is 99.9% of these reviews are buy folks operating from land. Note if they mention the type of antenna system they are using in their reviews. If some guy has a huge tower based YAGI, you’re experience will be different. 😉

SpectatorHow did you setup your antenna on Black Sheep?
I think my PO has the entire standing rigging (since it’s all bonded together) setup as the antenna. I definitely don’t have an antenna built into a stay with isolators.

SpectatorThere are some photos in the Pearson424.org gallery of moving the batteries in front of the steering quadrant and aft of the fuel tank. https://www.pearson424.org/gallery/album08
Also, I’ve been making a page linking to all the individual P424 projects I can find which you might find useful:

SpectatorAs I’m sure you all knew I had zero trouble with the removal portion of my pluming project. I’m not done the install yet, but pulling the hose from the foot pump and then giving it a few pumps created enough suction to almost completely empty the tanks. When I do the install I’m going to put a T from each tank line to allow me to empty into the bilge.
That was a great suggestion!

SpectatorPaul said the same thing so obviously my reluctance to do that is unwarranted. I have this healthy fear of filling the boat with water, but it will let me clean out the sewer (not oily just dirty) since I recently had some salt-water come in when I had my little thru-hull scare.
When I re-do the plumbing I’ll add that T-Valve Paul mentioned too. I was thinking about adding a valve at each tank as well so I don’t need to empty the tanks to do plumbing work. More to research and figure out.
Thanks!

SpectatorOne of the issues I have with my bilge is that that long run to the transom results in an amount of water equal to the volume of that long hose to the transom constantly sitting in my sewer because it runs back in when the bilge turns off. It’s not that much, but it seems like it could be less.
Is that just normal or should I be looking into a better bilge pump?
