The Medium Profile ones. I just ordered 2. The cutout opening is 3/16″ bigger than the Ocean Series.

    Hi Alan:

I am sure Rich will comment, but here is the link to his discussion about going from the RV-20 to the RV-26.

    http://www.richardcarter.net/repower/Vdrive.html

Based on his discussion about propeller selection, I got the impression you can order any gear ratio you want from Walter.

    Alan:

My original mounts on my W60 were from Bushings Inc. The replacement mounts are DF-2207-2. I don’t know if these are the same for the W58, but they maybe if the engine weights are similar.

These mounts can be purchased for around $50 each.

“The mizzen mast is not missed at all, in fact it opens up the big beautiful cockpit of the 424. We sail on San Francisco Bay in winds that can rattle your teeth. A double reef and a 150 genoa is the preferred rig to weather. She points with the best of them. “

Without the mizzen mast, how do you brace your feet. I find I have one foot on the mizzen mast most of the time offshore, when you are normally sitting in one of the forward corners?

Welcome back to the list. You will have to fill us in on some of the project details one day.

As for the lights, I would just go for something waterproof designed to go under cars. Your local auto shop will have lots of choices or you can get them here for $3.50:

    Joe:

Like everything on a boat, that “depends”. You have to get the 50-150 amp-hrs of energy for refrigeration from somewhere. If right now you need to run your engine an hour a day to charge the batteries, you can run your 110v system through an inverter at the same time for “free”. You can also run it dockside. If you were to get a Honda 2000, you may be able to both charge the batteries and run the 110V system at the same time, or at least once the initial charging is finished.

If you put in a 12v system, you will still need to get the energy into the system. If you added a couple hundred watts of solar at the same time, you may be in pretty good shape.

It all comes down to the energy budget for the boat and how you plan to meet it.

What size of compressor is the 110v system?

Another vote for the single ply toilet paper. Costco in Canada sells it under the White Swan label. This is the same stuff I mentioned a year ago when we were discussing putting paper into a composting head.

I first starting using it a home after my neighbor mentioned that his septic tank had plugged up after he started using a Charmin type of product. I guess these quilted papers have a lot of binders in them that hold them together, even when wet.

The engineer in me just ran a little experiment. I took four sheets of a crumpled quilted paper , placed it in a funnel and poured about a cup of water over it. It ended up collapsing down to the size of about 1/3 cup. Doing the same thing with the single ply product yielded a ball the size of a teaspoon.

For those that are bagging the used stuff on board, you really should give the single ply stuff a try. Not having to bag it is one little way of not making cruising like camping.

The lag screws on my main mast step were 3/8″ x 2 1/2″. I had to grind off a couple of the heads as well, but I was able to remove the screws by using vice grips on the remaining shank. They came out pretty easy that way.

    John:

Assuming you have the required legal flares on board, you can get additional SOLAS flares for free from you local liferaft re-packer. When they are repacking commercial liferafts, they replace any flares that are supposed to expire before the next repack. I know Alan got a large quantity of still current SOLAS flares for free when he repacked his liferaft before his trip.

As far as getting rid of the old ones, I thought that is how you celebrate July 4th!!!

I noticed that your software list did not have either of the free programs that are out there, SeaClear and OpenCPN.

SeaClear has been around for a while. I have only played with it a few times, but one of it’s advantages is that it will allow you to import scanned charts into the program.

    http://www.sping.com/seaclear/

OpenCPN has only been around for a couple of years, but it is open source software.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencpn/

Most of the development activity has been taking place on the Cruiser Forum , where it has it’s own forum. I had downloaded this software a year ago, but have not used it that much, as it is getting continually enhanced. Based on the amount of work being done on it, I get the feeling that it is going to be a pretty good product.

I am going to put my day tank there( where the holding tank used to be) with racor filters upstream and downstream of the tank. Should be able to get a 20-30 gallon tank in there, plenty big enough for a day tank, but kind of small for a main fuel tank.
