My own post on replacing the sound insulation on my engine cover. I did not do anything but put in new 2″ insulation. Its much improved!

I’m not sure if they slide or not, but if they do, I think a wrap of clear Rescue Tape would fix that pretty quickly.

I have been wondering about this myself and while petroleum jelly is recommended (some say grease others say no to grease, so go with no) the idea of something that can smear all over things isn’t appealing to me. There is a commercial product call NCP-2 which is widely available from a variety of stores. Defender sells it in a kit with a terminal cleaner. This link has the best picture of the product: http://www.sbsbattery.com/subpage_index.php?_subp_=114

I’ll probably stop in at my local auto parts store and see what they’re selling as well and just go with that.

    That’s from my blog. πŸ˜‰

The starter works perfectly now. As part of it I decided to replace one of the ground wires which was attached to base of the V-Drive. I also decided to replace the one connecting the v-drive to the raw water strainer. The raw water strainer bolt broke off at the base so I pulled it out completely and replaced it as well. It needed it, I hadn’t planned on doing it today though. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, everything is starting nicely and water is flowing cleanly. Yay !

Ok, I got the starter off. The last bolt needed a 10” socket extension to be reached and only a 14mm socket fit well enough to hold.
Pics of the starter on flickr. I’m thinking it might not be salvageable, I’ll drop it off tomorrow and find out I guess.

After the bolts were I used a putty knife and a ball peen hammer to work a bit of a gap between the starter and the block, then I used a screwdriver in that small gap and the hammer to get it off. I used a liberal amount of PB Blaster and the heat gun for a bit before the final assault with the socket.

Hey what do you know the one I have already is a Delco, now if I can just get it off.

Top right bolt one only needed some PB Blaster and the Knipex pliers. Not sure what size it was, but metric and standard would have stripped that bolt.
Bottom right bolt needed some heat gun and the PB Blaster and the Knipex Pliers.
Top left bolt is one its second round of heat and PB Blaster.. hopefully twice is the charm!

I learned about the Knipex pliers from Brion Toss. LOVE THEM!!

Hopefully I’ll get some sleep tonight and then I’m taking the starter down to Blanchard Auto Electric here in Seattle which is where my local Westerbeke dealer said they send their starters. I thought that was nice to not withhold that just so they could get a cut.

You know me, I’ll have pics and all later. πŸ˜‰

I think that whole are needs to be reworked and made to be a more functional part of the “engine room” with gauges, etc… Haven’t given it a lot of thought but I don’t love how that little wall is just there looking so empty but yet with so litlte clearance behind it you can mount much there… seems like much improvement could be done with that area.

I have not installed them yet, I did pick them up last weekend though and they look so beautiful I want to hang them in my condo as art work.

I talked to the guy that owns NFM for quite a while when we picked them up. He’s a great guy and quite the ambitious entrepreneur, he owns the foundry and the land in china where these are made.

How bad was the overlap? Could you slide the window aft a bit?

OK, so its seemed like the option of doing less work was the best one in this case. I cut a little window in the sound insulation and installed the last piece of foam. Done and Done.

I do have some extra foam maybe I’ll put a piece on the center hatch too to see if it quiets the v-drive a bit, but that is for another day maybe when I put the PYI hatchbord locks in.

    Enjoy the long weekend everyone!

They are not mounted yet, but I plan to run the wire from the stereo which is in the shelf above the aft berth up under the headliner and then out to the cabin top. I’ll probably have a waterproof connection there so I can remove the speakers it I want.

I will be redoing the headliner when I rebed all the deck hardware so I will finish it then, right now I just have one of the aft speakers hooked up with the wire running free and I place it where I want when working above deck.
