I pulled the racor off… not hard.
I also cut the end of the engine tray a bit, that thing is massively thick
I’m sure I didn’t weaken it at all.

I’m also getting new motor mounts for those playing a long at home the
original part number DF-2206-2 is now DF-2207-2 by Bushings Inc. Shouldbe
    about $40-50 each.

The tank did not have a big obvious hole in and we could have had a repair
made, but the estimate is $500 for a new tank so since everything was out
I’m going to go with the new tank.

While the engine is out we’re going to clean it up a bit and try to spray
    some engine paint on it.
Along with that we’re going to upgrade the alternator to a
    Leece-Neville 8MR2401UA100Amp
Alternator ($250), and a Balmar MC-614 external regulator (with
temperature sensors). We’ll keep the 65amp as a spare and the 8MR2401UA has
a built-in regulator as a backup to the external. I think I’m also going to
put in a dedicated 12V starting battery and move the 2 6v batteries on bank
two to be in bank one adding an additional 220 Amp Hours to that bank.

Anyway, we’ve been cranking here for three solid days and tomorrow we’re
going to take the bus in from Charleston (where local weather phenomenon
makes it always foggy) and see some sun and walk around and not work on the
    boat.

LOTS of pics on Flickr – http://www.flickr.com/photos/deepplaya/
Video of flying engine to come.

One thing I considered was to have the bottom cut off and a new one welded

    repair.
I did have a pinhole leak on a welded seam repaired on an aluminum tank on
a previous boat. That welder simply filled the tank with nitrogen first.

My experience is that no one knows anything about VDrives or that they’ve
heard of them and they think its odd we have them in our sailboats. I wonder
if there any shops in Portsmouth RI who worked on Pearsons a lot who might
have some insight to share on the phone. Maybe we need to make a list of
    yards we’ve all used…

Sorry. I forgot to mention that my v-drive is directly bolted to the BW

flange together. Therein lies the complication.

The other problem, I’m not sure there are any “pros” locally that have
experience in this rig and would probably trust myself to figure it out
better than depending on an inexperienced mechanic to mess it up.

I hit that reset button, and was then able to jump the solenoid and get started. Anyone know what that circuit breaker is doing there and what would cause it to blow? Wife used a powerful hair dryer with inverter–wondered if that was the culprit?

Going to have a guy come downa nd take a look today… just talking on the phone he had an interesting suggestion of removing the fuel, and the old tank, throwing in an interim solution (bladder smaller pre-made tank) to get us down the coast while we waited for a new tank.

Hate having to deal with this in a hurried manner… and its a holiday weekend too… yay!

    Patrick,
Many of the aluminum tanks supplied by Pearson developed pinhole leaks.
Hopefully this is not the case with your tank, but the hydrostatic pressure
of the fuel overflow might have been enough to open a pinhole. I believe
the pinholes were caused by electrolysis between the tank and the hold-down
straps. Earlier 424s came with iron tanks, which did not have this
    problem.
If there is no fuel evident on the tops and sides of the tank, could the
fuel you see have been there before and you only noticed it because of the
    spill?
Clean it up and see if any fuel comes back. Good luck.

Sorry its taken me so long to reply. I’m in Neah Bay and we didn’t have
    internet for a few days.

I looked it over and now what Skip said makes sense… Connecting the
grounds right there in the battery tray is what confused me.

We had abused them though… was low on water. Filled. Charged. Equalized
and checked the water again. We’re good for now. Most likely we’ll replace
the batteries, upsize the House bank in San Francisco and put in a dedicated
    seperate starting battery.

We have been stowing and organizing things better as we’ve been moving
along… there is a TON of room in this boat. We have a few practically
empty lockers. Today I took the hanging rod our of the salon locker and was
able to fit our cooler in there!! We only have a small number of hanging
things and they all fit in the v-berth so a huge gain there.

Thanks as always for the help everyone!

    Hi Patrick,

Looks like you have two banks, both of course 12V. The batteries are
wired in pairs in series to get the 12V but one series pair is paralleled
together giving you have 4 batteries in one bank and 2 in the other.

If you look closely at the diagram all the grounds are wired together which
is correct. Then one positive goes to one pole on the battery switch.
Then two positives are wired together and then to the other pole on th
    battery switch.
