ParticipantJohn, I just replaced that oil pan gasket on my W58. I had the same leak in St Barts last year but I waited until I got back to the states to fix it. It looked like a lot of oil at the time while it was dripping but in actuality as I kept checking it there was not much volume.
To replace the gasket the engine needs to come out. I did that myself and only took about 5-6 hours working alone. The gaskets as readily available but the tranny needs to come off (6 bolts). You’ll need an engine stand. Not a big job, just a PITA. another day to get the engine back in and hooked up.
I had a friend who used Bobby’s Marina in Simpson Bay Lagoon offers professional marine services, including travel-lift haul-out up to 50-tons, storage and DIY.
He was pleased with their work.
Good luck and if there is anything else I can do for you… let me know.
Did you get to anchor at Colombier?

ParticipantOne of the best things I found for using the Octopus hydraulic cylinder and pump is that the entire unit is repairable at sea with common tools by the common person. Most of the other units require that they be sent in to be repaired. (Raymaine uses a small nylon pinion gear in their drive that is only factory repairable)
http://www.octopusmarine.ca/content/products-and-services/linear-actuators.htm
The other thing which is probably a function of both the pump/cylinder and the control head is the SPEED lock to lock to be able to control the both fast enough in large ocean swells on the bean and aft.
For the control head I use the Raymarine X30 control head.
Been very happy with both. Norfolk to Bermuda, Bermuda to ST Maartin etc……

ParticipantPatrick,
A quick before the football game starts.
Jack Tyler has extensive thoughts on this subject on his (John’s website) and at SSCA.
2 items to keep in mind
 1. AC is not a natural on a boat. You have to make AC which is something else to maintain. To convert AC to DC there are losses in the conversion.
 2. Make sure that what ever unit you get, that the parts to repair it are not proprietary. I made my own 34 gph unit using off the shelf parts that was driven by a Kubota E300 mounted in the aft lazerette which also had a 100 amp alternator attached.
All manual valves, simple to operate, simple to build, simple to maintain.
It’s just high pressure water though a filter…..

ParticipantWhen I removed the old damper plate, 2 of the springs were lying at the bottom of the bell housing and the others were about to fall out. I replaced it with a genuine Westerbeke part.
So I guess this is what it sounds like with a tight damper plate.
I am sure it didn’t sound like this with all new parts back in 1981!— On Wed, 1/5/11, John Stevenson wrote:

ParticipantJohn,
I wish I knew whether the damper plate I replaced is faulty or the V-Drive is at fault and whether it really IS OK as Walter’s says….. Changing out that damper plate is not that easy……

ParticipantI hear ya…. after spending last winter in the Carib…… I am back in Rochester where we’ve gotten over 44 inches of snow so far in just December…..
Don Walter is pretty sure the VDrive OK also but is willing to put it on the test bench just to make sure…. and to please me……
I wonder if the noise will go away or lessen after the damper plate has a few miles on it?

ParticipantI may remove the VDrive and drive it Walters to have it bench tested (in my presence) while the boat is on the hard.

ParticipantI put a new damper plate on…. Westerbeke Original part (with springs) AND had the VDrive rebuilt…. so I am not entirely positive WHAT is generating the noise except that is it coming from the VDrive.
Type of Engine Westerbekre W58
– Type of Transmission and gear ratio Velvet Drive 2:1 I think
– V-Drive model RV20
– RPMs at idle 700
– Gear Backlash Level: LOUD— On Wed, 12/15/10, John Stevenson wrote:

ParticipantI would not characterize the noise I have have has “backlash”….. more like a machine gun going off until I increase the RPM…… ???

ParticipantOne of the very nice things about the Octopus hydraulic drive is that it is repairable in the cockpit with a minimum of tools and a very simple, inexpensive repair kit.
